How Your Skincare Routine Affects Your Permanent Makeup
Skincare Products That Can Decrease The Lifespan Of Your Permanent Makeup
1. Retinol and Anti-Aging Products
Anti-aging products are designed to rejuvenate the skin by shedding old layers and promoting new growth. This speed up in cell turnover can affect your permanent makeup by causing it to deteriorate more quickly and potentially appear uneven. If you use retinol or other anti-aging products, it is recommended that you pause use during the healing process and limit direct contact with the tattoo after it is healed completely.
2. Acne Treatments
Some acne treatments, like Accutane, can affect permanent makeup as they cause significant skin shedding. This can lead to poor pigment retention, uneven results, or increased risk of complications.
3. Best Practices
Use gentle products, like mild cleansers, on and around the tattoo area to minimize any undesired results.
Some Other Things to Consider
1. Sun Exposure - Wear SPF!
The sun can affect your skin in a variety of ways depending on the amount of exposure. Immediate concerns are sunburn, due to prolonged exposure with no sunscreen, and there can be long-term risks like the breakdown of collagen. This can affect permanent makeup by leading to fading and color distortion. It is extremely important to wear sun protection, whether in the form of sunscreen, hats, or other physical sun blocks.
2. Botox and Dermal Fillers
Things like Botox and fillers can affect how your permanent makeup appears. If you get Botox immediately before getting permanent makeup, your muscles can shift slightly and prevent accurate mapping and the shape of the cosmetic tattoo. It is ideal to get permanent makeup first, following it with any Botox filler. However, getting Botox too soon after permanent makeup can interfere with healing. If you already have Botox, wait at least two weeks after the injection to get permanent makeup. Both treatments can be performed and can even be beneficial to each other, as long as there is proper preparation. It is very important to consult with both your permanent makeup provider and your Botox provider to get the best and safest results.
Skincare, particularly ingredients like retinol, acids, and other exfoliating agents, can cause permanent makeup to fade prematurely by speeding up skin cell turnover and stripping away pigment. Sun exposure and harsh exfoliants also accelerate fading. To protect permanent makeup, avoid active skincare ingredients on the treated area, use sunscreen, and maintain a gentle skincare routine - your skin will thank you!
