How Color Matching Works for Microblading & Lip Blushing (And Why It’s Not One-Size-Fits-All)

A common question asked before an appointment is: “How do you pick the color?”

Color matching is one of the most important steps in both microblading and lip blushing. It’s far more personalized than choosing a brow pencil or lipstick. Every pigment blend is custom created with your natural features and healed results in mind, which is why the process is never one-size-fits-all.

WHat is color matching?

Color matching is the process of selecting and blending pigments to complement your skin type, harmonize with your undertones and achieve your desired outcome. Artists don’t rely on a single pre-made color straight from the bottle.  Their specialized training enables artists to adjust the color depth and tone, ensuring the pigment heals soft and natural in the skin (Perma Blend, n.d.).

Brow color matching

For microblading, the goal is to personalize life-like brows, one hair stroke at a time.  Artists assess:

  • Natural brow hair color

  • Client’s complexion/ coloring and skin type

  • Skin undertones

  • Individual client goals

During the healing process pigment tones cool as they bond in your dermis.  Artists often proactively choose a slightly warmer pigment to reach your target/goal color for your end healed results.

Lip Blushing Color Matching

Lip blushing focuses on enhancing your natural lip tone while improving symmetry, shape definition and consistency of saturation. Artists evaluate:

  • Natural lip base color and client’s undertones

  • Hyperpigmentation or areas of uneven saturation

  • Desired tone

Lip pigment heals lighter, often 1-2 shades softer than the initial color. Artists skillfully plan for best healed results. (Johnson & Anbouba, 2023).

Why its not one-size-fits-all

No two clients heal the same. Factors like skin type, sun exposure, skincare, and aftercare all affect how pigment settles and softens during the healing process (Society of Permanent Cosmetic Professionals [SPCP], n.d.).

While inspiration photos are a great resource in collaborating with your artist on your color goals, your final pigment blend will always be one-of-kind and tailored to you.

Conclusion

Color matching fuses color theory with experienced artistry to create results that look effortless and natural. Through custom pigment blends and personalized consultations, your artist ensures your brows or lips enhance your natural features, never overpowering them. The best cosmetic tattoo results aren’t copied, they’re customized to you!
